We were engaged by the owners of this exceptionally steep ocean-side property, located in Sydney’s northern beaches area, due to our company's experience and expertise in working with unusual and challenging sites - sites such as this small, difficult to access site in a known landslip area ….. a site that others said it was not possible to build a Pool on. Our proven track record in the design and project management of Swimming Pools and outdoor spaces on difficult sites such as this hugely minimised any risks of ‘surprises’ occurring on this exciting project.
The Pool, located on the edge of a steep cliff so as to maximise views, was constructed at the top of the original driveway. Privacy, separation and protection from prevailing winds is provided by the pale, washed masonry wall, itself punctuated by small up-lit geometric voids that provide glimpses into and out from the pool area. An underwater seating and lounging area was incorporated into the Pool along the base of the wall, providing a wonderful area to relax, read a book, have a drink – or just sit and enjoy the view.
The original double garage was converted into a magnificent Pool Cabana, complete with kitchenette, sauna, bathroom and change facilities, plus internal access to the Residence above and an entertaining area that looks across the Pool to the Pacific Ocean. A suitable travertine finish was selected so that it was able to be used inside the Pool Cabana itself as well as extended out to and around the Pool.
The minimalist design of this project was intended so as to not compete with the spectacular natural setting. The internal glass edges form invisible boundaries to the Pool, providing uninterrupted visual access to the spectacular views beyond, whilst the Italian glass mosaic tile finish to the Pool interior was carefully selected to blend in with the colour of the ocean.
